THE COLLECTIVE CONVERSATION – October 2025 NEWSLETTER

The Collective Conversation October 2025

If you’re thinking about getting solar for your nonprofit, you’re not alone! Many nonprofit organizations across the nation are going solar, and for good reason. Solar not only lowers your carbon footprint, supporting the environment — it can also lower your nonprofit’s electricity bills, allowing you to focus precious financial resources on your mission.

But the process of going solar may seem daunting.

That’s why we’ve created a comprehensive 62-page solar guide to give you the information you need, every step of the way.

At CollectiveSun, we’ve helped hundreds of nonprofits across the country go solar. We can help you before, during, and after your solar is installed — helping you determine whether solar makes sense for your organization, explaining the available financing options and incentives, and even managing the project for you, if you pick a financing option that includes that service.

Now, the support we provide nonprofits includes our new 62-page guide, with information to support you wherever you are in your solar journey. The guide includes:

  • Solar basics

  • Financing solar for your nonprofit

  • Preparing your nonprofit for solar

  • What to do after you go solar

  • And more things you need to know

As a subscriber to our newsletter, you can download the 62-page guide for free below. Let us know if you have any questions or comments — we’re always here to help.

A Tale of Two Nonprofit Solar Projects

Nonprofits who want to go solar have various options for how to finance and manage their project:

  • They can secure the cash or the financing themselves — though that can be challenging for nonprofit organizations — and also manage the project themselves.

  • They can get financing from a partner like CollectiveSun. With our Solar Loan they can still manage the project themselves, with oversight provided by us.

  • They can sign up for a CollectiveSun Solar Power Agreement (SPA), in which case we take care of both the financing and the project management. All CollectiveSun financing options include the necessary tax filings (which often frustrate those unfamiliar with such challenging forms) .

Which financing option makes sense for your organization depends on various factors, such as whether your nonprofit has in-house construction management experience and whether you’re comfortable bearing the risks of construction and long-term ownership. You can learn more about the options in our article “Choosing the Right Solar Financing Option for Your Nonprofit.”

Whichever option you choose, financing your project with CollectiveSun brings many advantages. Two real-life nonprofit solar project case studies illustrate the difference between working with us and doing it yourself.

Solar and Storage Momentum Continues

Solar has been going strong, breaking new records even as the “One Big Beautiful Bill” was signed into law, with wind and solar now making up almost one-fifth of total U.S. electrical generation. In 2025 solar is leading the way: 16 GW were added through July, accounting for nearly 75% of the 21.5 GW of electric generation capacity added overall. Energy storage is an increasingly important part of the story, with solar and batteries stabilizing the grid in Texas, while energy storage set a new record with 5.6 GW installed across the U.S. in Q2 2025.

Solar Becomes Even More Attractive as Electricity Costs Rise

Electricity costs are rising across the nation in all sectors, a burden for nonprofits who could be using those resources to serve their communities. As the New Jersey gubernatorial race shows, this could be an issue in the midterms. States may need to step in to ensure energy affordability, as Arizona Governor Kaite Hobbs is attempting. In light of rising electricity costs, there’s no better time to save with solar and hedge against future cost increases.

Schools Are Saving with Solar
Across the U.S., schools like this Pennsylvania school district have been saving on their electric bills with solar, and a recent study shows the savings can be significant. There’s still much more room for solar deployment at schools, as evidenced by the lack of solar schools in Illinois despite strong solar programs in the state. Like many nonprofits, schools face challenges to going solar, the latest being upcoming deadlines for federal incentives. But the benefits are worth overcoming the challenges, and CollectiveSun can help!
