Once your nonprofit has a solar system installed, what do you need to do to maintain it?

The good news is that solar is a simple and trusted technology, with no moving parts and very few components susceptible to failure.

It’s still a good idea to monitor your system — and a little basic maintenance will ensure the best performance and optimum solar production.

Do you need to do the monitoring and maintenance yourself?

If your nonprofit finances your system with a CollectiveSun Solar Loan or purchases it outright with cash, you’ll need to ensure your solar system is monitored and any required scheduled maintenance, or unscheduled repairs, are performed. That doesn’t mean you have to do it all yourself: you can hire contractors to perform the maintenance. You do need to assign someone to manage the work, and you need to account for the work in the budget for your solar project.

If your nonprofit is not well equipped to manage monitoring and maintenance, you might opt for the Easy Button “solar subscription” solution of a CollectiveSun Solar Power Agreement (SPA). This option provides benefits beyond requiring no cash upfront. We will also select a vetted installer, undertake all contract negotiations, take care of tax filings, and provide monitoring and maintenance.

Monitoring

With a solar monitoring system, you can see how much electricity your system is producing. If something isn’t working as it should, you need to know so it can be fixed. If you notice your energy production drops significantly, it could be a sign of a malfunction, or it could indicate your panels are being obstructed by shade, debris, or dust.

If you financed your system with a CollectiveSun Solar Power Agreement (SPA), we’ll take care of …

Solar Spotlight: City Care

The mission of City Care in Oklahoma City is to address the root causes of homelessness while empowering individuals to thrive.

The organization’s new 109.62 kW rooftop solar system will help support this mission. Amy Gillett, Senior Director of Development at City Care, filled us in on the organization and their solar system.

This loan was made possible by the generous participation of the BQuest Foundation.

Who benefits from the programs and services you provide?

Homelessness often occurs at the intersection of catastrophic loss and relational poverty. In Oklahoma City, crises such as job loss, illness, substance use disorder, and family breakdown can make stable housing unattainable. City Care bridges this gap by addressing urgent needs with innovative, unduplicated solutions that restore dignity, stability, and opportunity.

Since 1996, City Care has been dedicated to supporting our neighbors experiencing or transitioning from homelessness. Our programs include low-barrier shelter, housing navigation, case management, street outreach, and permanent supportive housing. We seek to address the root causes of homelessness while empowering individuals to thrive, working toward a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone has a place to call home.

What sparked your organization’s interest in solar energy, and how will you use the savings generated by going solar to further support your mission?

Our decision to go solar was an investment in sustainability — both environmental and financial. The savings generated from solar energy will be reinvested into our mission, ensuring we can continue providing life-changing services, expanding our reach, and supporting the daily operations that allow us to serve those in need. By reducing costs, we can maximize our impact, empowering individuals to find stability and hope for the future.

“Together, we can work to create lasting change and build a community where everyone has a place to call home.” — Amy Gillett, Senior Director of Development at City Care

The Growth of Solar

Solar keeps growing! This clean energy source supplied over 10% of global electricity consumption in 2024; in the U.S., March 2025 was the 19th consecutive month in which solar was the largest source of new electricity-generating capacity. Our nation’s solar capacity is expected to triple in the next 10 years, with clean energy soon producing half of the world’s electricity!

The Growth of Solar Manufacturing

It’s not just our solar generating capacity that’s increasing — solar manufacturing is also growing in the U.S. Solar cell production is expected to double in the U.S. in less than two years, with much of the growth spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act.

The Growth of Solar Recycling

As the solar industry matures, solar recycling is on the rise. Top recycler SolarCycle successfully recycled nearly half a million solar panels in 2024 and increased its recycling capacity by 228%, while solar recycling startup OnePlanet has raised $90 million to build a plant in Florida that will use a novel process to salvage copper, silicon, and aluminum from broken solar panels.

CollectiveSun helps make solar for nonprofits a reality! Our innovative approach helps these organizations secure affordable financing and streamline project implementation.
