As a Korean immigrant church community, New Praise Church in Cypress, CA has an active, multi-generational congregation. The church building is used throughout the week for events, classes, and bible studies. That means many hours with the lights and the air conditioning running.
Howard Kim, a church leader and real estate agent, began exploring how the church could go solar as the temperatures in the summer of 2015 skyrocketed, and so did their power bills, which tripled. In addition to working to ensure that the savings from a PPA partnership with CollectiveSun® would pencil out (New Praise Church will save $135,000 over the lifespan of the solar panels), Mr. Kim has also diligently translated the details of the project into Korean for his fellow congregation members so that each investor has a full understanding of the impact of their solar power project.
The project will cost $47,115.81 to complete, and CollectiveSun® is providing the first $11,778.95, the amount equivalent to the 25% of the project costs by passing through the tax credits CollectiveSun® qualifies for but nonprofits like New Praise Church do not.
New Praise Church started their campaign with an in-person appeal by Mr. Kim who is reaching the grandparents in the community by handing out the CollectiveSun® printed flyer and prospectus, while the younger members are easily investing online at CollectiveSun.com/newpraise.
