The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (LFJCC) Jacobs Family Campus, in San Diego, California is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for the region’s diverse Jewish community as well as the greater general community. No matter what your background or faith, the LFJCC welcomes all to be part of their community.

The LFJCC’s work is now supported by a new solar system on their building and parking lot. Dan Shapiro, LFJCC Marketing Director, filled us in about the organization and their solar project.

Who benefits from the programs and services you provide?

The mission of the LFJCC is to connect our community with Jewish heritage, identity, experiences, and values, ensuring the continuity and vibrancy of Jewish life. We fulfill this mission by promoting the community’s physical and mental well-being and offering a rich array of stimulating and innovative social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs and services.

That includes the entire San Diego community. The LFJCC is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for San Diego’s diverse Jewish community and its greater general community.

Tell us about your solar system

Our solar installation — a 463.8 kW rooftop and carport system with 876 panels — significantly reduces our carbon footprint and yields savings that enhance our ability to provide vital services.

“We are thrilled to have invested in this solar project, which would not have been possible without the guidance of our JCC Board of Directors, the dedication of our staff, and the generosity of our members, lay leaders, and donors.” — John Lefter, LFJCC CEO

How will you use the savings generated by going solar to further support your mission?

These savings directly support offerings like our world-class preschool and summer camp, innovative programs such as our Retirement Academy, our recently opened inclusive playground for families with special needs, and numerous cultural arts programs in our 500-seat Garfield Theatre.

What would you want people to know about your organization that they might not know?

A good portion of the members and people who attend events are not Jewish. The LFJCC is open to everyone, and we serve everyone — from babies to seniors.

What did you learn in the process of going solar that other nonprofits should know?

It makes a big difference having a partner who’s experienced in helping nonprofits go solar. We’ve had a positive experience being supported by the CollectiveSun team, even after the go-live date. The team is continuing to guide us through the daily operations and recommending ways to optimize the investment in our system.

How would someone get in touch with your organization to learn more about your services?

Visit our website at lfjcc.org or call one of our friendly Guest Service support staff members at 858-457-3030.
