As electricity prices keep going up and solar costs keep coming down, it makes more sense than ever for nonprofits to go solar. In addition to lowering your carbon footprint, solar lowers your nonprofit’s electricity bills, allowing you to focus resources on your mission.
That doesn’t mean that going solar is always simple for nonprofits. CollectiveSun is here to guide you through the process, and we’ll make it as simple as we can.

How to Start a Green Team for Your Nonprofit, Solar Company, or Any Organization
You’ll also need support from within your organization. That’s where a green team can help.
What is a green team?
A green team is simply a group of people focused on promoting sustainability at an organization. In a business, a green team is generally made up of employees, supported by executive leadership. At a nonprofit, the team can include dedicated volunteers; in a house of worship, that can mean congregants.
Why start a green team?
While CollectiveSun can greatly simplify the process of going solar, we can’t make decisions for your organization — whether it’s a house of worship or another type of nonprofit. You probably can’t make decisions for your nonprofit on your own, either, especially big decisions like going solar. You’ll need to get buy-in from your organization, ideally at all levels.
A green team can help by providing education and building enthusiasm for solar and other sustainability initiatives, such as recycling programs. A green team can also….

The Solar Spotlight:
SOLAR SPOTLIGHT: CUMMC
Christ United Methodist Ministry Center (CUMMC) began as a church. Today, it is much more.
This ecumenical, nonprofit, faith-based urban ministry center in San Diego, California transformed from a church with a declining congregation to a bustling center that’s open 7 days a week, serving the unhoused, those in need of food or clothing, refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers.
In addition to the many services it provides, the ministry also houses the CollectiveSun offices, as part of its Impact Center co-working hub. So, we were especially thrilled to help the facility go solar.

Supporting CUMMC’s Critical Programs
Solar is great for nonprofits because it’s about more than just lowering electric bills and carbon footprints. For a nonprofit, saving on electric bills means having more resources to support the organization’s mission. When a nonprofit has as broad an impact as CUMMC, those saved dollars go far.
The mission of Christ United Methodist Ministry Center is multifaceted: to provide a nurturing environment for worship, religious education, and fellowship for religious congregations and a base of operations for religious, charitable, and community 501(c)(3) organizations engaged in public benefit ministries, especially feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, befriending strangers, caring for the imprisoned, ministering to the sick, and quenching spiritual thirst.

If that sounds like a lot, it’s because it is. CUMMC feeds the hungry, serving as a food bank and providing families with groceries. The organization is currently providing offsite shelter for about 120 people, says CUMMC’s Pastor Owens, whom they house for up to 6 months. CUMMC currently serves people from 29 countries, he adds, and all continents except Australia. In addition to food, the unhoused are provided clothing, places to charge phones, and bathrooms. Fifteen AA groups meet at the ministry center, including a group for the blind.

CUMMC’s Solar Journey
It wasn’t hard for CUMMC to connect with CollectiveSun, given that our offices are in the ministry’s basement. In discussing the possibility of …
